A great day for the Cavé siblings as they lifted their first IWT title together. Pauline also won the Women’s Doubles title with Anna-Klara Ahlmer after they beat Stephanie Chung and Hollie Ranson in a very close match. Let’s see what happened on day 1 of the IWT Swiss Open!
Pauline and Thomas Cavé prevail in surprise mixed doubles final
A first title for the siblings, and some good wins today in Switzerland. They started the day by beating second seeds Ahlmer/Böhm +13 (21-10 13-21 21-12 10-9) before taking on Kaptein/Mamié in the semi-final. They won the match +18 (21-15 11-21 21-5 10-4) with a good win in table-tennis and a dominant performance in squash and tennis. They faced Dony/Andrey setting up a surprise final as both pairs were not seeded.
Dony and Andrey beat Ranson and Gupta in the first round by +13 21-5 18-21 17-21 13-9) before taking on top seeds Chung and Lenggenhager. Dony/Andrey managed to take this match by +7 (6-21 16-21 21-16 21-9) in an entertaining semi-final. The Cavé were slightly too strong in the final, after they took a close table-tennis game 22-20 and lost badminton by just 2 points 19-21 they made the difference in squash and tennis, taking the match +16 (22-20 19-21 21-9 10-6).and their first title. This is Pauline’s second mixed elite title this season.
Chung and Lenggenhager beat Kaptein and Mamié +17 (21-19 21-12 21-16 6-5) to claim the bronze medal.
Another title for Anna-Klara Ahlmer and Pauline Cavé
They have been distributing almost all women’s doubles titles between the two of them this season, and this time they were playing on the same side of the net. They managed to get the win against Stephanie Chung and Holly Ranson in a very close battle that could have gone either way. Chung/Ranson got the lead in table-tennis taking it 21-16 and badminton 21-18 before Ahlmer/Cavé regained some points in squash, taking it 21-12. Tennis went all the way, and Ahlmer/Cavé eventually managed to take it +4 (16-21 18-21 21-12 21-18).
They then went on to beat Dony/Kilchenmann +24 (21-19 21-14 21-6) in their last group match, securing the title. Chung/Ranson finished second, beating Dony/Kilchenmann +10 (21-16 23-25 21-16 14-12).
Wildcards Böhm and Andrey win first IWT doubles title together
A first IWT doubles title for Böhm/Andrey. It was a successful day for Andrey as he also made the final of the mixed doubles. They started well by beating second seeds Carlier/Kurek +17 (83-81 21-7 15-21 11-4). (It is currently being verified if this table-tennis score was this high and we will get back to you!)
They faced top seeds Pichler/Volf in the final, after they beat Oettl/Vogelsang +12 (21-13 19-21 19-21 18-10). Andrey/Böhm were the stronger pair today, taking the match +8 (21-18 21-11 19-21 11-14).
Kurek and Carlier beat Oettl and Vogelsang for the bronze medal, surviving a brutal battle taking the win by just 3 points The overall score was +3 (21-16 7-21 21-14 21-16).
Swiss Open titles for – Cavé/Prager, Voigt/Von Heimburg, Pichler/Roux, Sági/Otavka, Böhm/Schlepphorst
Thomas Cavé won two gold medals today, as he won the Men’s B/C doubles with Leonhard Prager. They beat Swiss duo Ekstrand/Paglia +16 (21-15 21-18 16-21 18-6) in the final. Scherrer/Wolf beat Gentile/Knaack +6 (17-21 17-21 21-9 18-16) in the 3/4 playoff. The women’s B title went to Voigt/Von Heimburg after they beat tournament organisor Esther Dübendorfer and her daughter Victoria in the final. The score was +18 (21-7 21-19 19-21 8-4). Mai/Rutschmann finished third, beating Furler/Roux +6 (13-21 21-11 20-22 21-15).
Pichler/Roux won the mixed B title together, after they beat Von Heimburg/Börner in the final by +17 (10-21 21-4 21-13 8-5). Mai/Carlier finished third. Sági/Otavka won the men’s C/D title beating Rauber/Rötlisberger +24 (21-2 21-10 15-21) in the final. Gros/Jalet finished third.
Böhm/Schlepphorst took the senior +45 title after beating Börner/Knaack in an incredibly close final. The score was +2 (17-21 12-21 21-10 21-17). King/Meyer finished third, beating Billigraham/Gupta by +3 (21-5 10-21 20-22 19-19).
