It was a good day for Sweden as both Ahlmer and Lindberg won the elite categories. The event run smoothly despite the airline and other strikes that were on just before the event. Luckily there were not quite so many withdrawals as expected and we managed to play men´s A, B, C and women’s A and B together with two senior classes. The event also witnessed the first ever new Gummiarm play-off for a round-robin group with three players having the same match points.
René Lindberg beat up-and-coming youngster Jesse Kiljunen +23 (21-8 19-21 21-9) in the final. This is a second elite singles title for Lindberg in what was a dominant performance in the final. Jesper Hedlund defeated Nicolas Lenggenhager +20 (21-7 3-21 21-11 21-7) to finish third. It was a great event for Finland’s junior Jesse Kiljunen as this is the best result of his career so far.
Strong start to the 2024 season for Ahlmer
It was a strong start for the season for Ahlmer, as she defeated Kaisu Anttila +33 (21-7 21-8 21-15) in the final. It was another dominant performance from Ahlmer who is continuing her good form from last season. Fabienne Dony finished third, beating Heli Mäkelä +30 (21-3 21-2 14-21) taking the bronze medal.
Open titles for – Ruokanen, Vuorinen,
Toni Ruokanen won the men’s B title after beating Anton Monnberg +12 (21-2 2-21 21-17 18-10) in the final. Leo Karppanen won the 3/4 playoff by beating Mikko Nissinen by just one point, taking the match +1 (21-17 21-8 10-21 16-21). Elma Vuorinen is the women’s B champion after winning all her group matches. She beat silver medalist Victoria Mai +37 (21-5 21-7 7-21 16-5). Louna Penttinen took home the bronze medal. Frenchman David Chelly is the men’s C champion after beating Kim Ljungberg-Jensen +4 (21-6 7-21 13-21 21-10) in a very close final. Henri Pelkonen finished third.
Senior titles for Li
Samuel K S Li is having another good run as he is the +50 champion. He won all his group matches, beating silver medalist David Chelly +11 (3-21 21-7 21-7 12-11). Kyosti Alaruikka finished third. The +60 resulted in a gummi-arm playoff as Antikainen, Raiski and Tennilä all had the same amount of points.
