One year ago, on 9th June 2020, Racketlon Federation Austria became an associate member of Sport Austria, the association responsible for the recognition of sports. Thanks to that, in the COVID-19 crisis around 140 Racketlon players, including a lot of juniors, were awarded elite status and were able to practice during lockdowns across Austria.
The reason they were allowed to train was to prepare for the 19th Austrian Racketlon Championships. This tournament was held from 3 to 6 of June in Graz. Over 100 players battled to be champion across 18 different categories.
The Austrian Racketlon Championships were held during the 1st Sport Austria Finals together with 23 other national championships and over 3,500 athletes at 18 venues in and around Graz.
Who Won Titles at the Austrian National Championships?
The elite singles titles went to Christine Seehofer and Michi Dickert. Elsewhere, Bernhard Pilsz and Emanuel Schopf won the Men’s Doubles, while Bettina Bugl and Martina Meissl won the Women’s Doubles. Meissl also teamed up with Dickert to lift the Mixed Doubles crown.
The Sportunion Rackathletes Austria – featuring Bugl, Stefan Urban, Lukas Windischberger, Thomas Wagner, Florian Harca, Fritz Thausing, Peter Robic and Marcel Weigl – won the team title for the first time in history. Next year, the 20th Austrian Championships will be held within the Sport Austria Finals from 16 to 19 June 2022.
