Pauline Cavé and Koen Hageraats claimed the IWT German Open titles this weekend. Pauline Cavé went into the women’s draw as the strong favourite, having not lost to any of her opponents before.
She had a strong start against Alina Reissenauer, who had a great tournament herself, before beating Adeline Kilchenmann and Kirsten Kaptein to secure the title. Alina Reissenauer showed her progress this season, beating Kirsten Kaptein 6-21 21-7 21-9 21-7 and Adeline Kilchenmann 19-21 8-21 21-16 21-6 to take the silver medal.
Kaptein beat her doubles partner Kilchenmann 21-10 8-21 21-10 13-6 to finish third.
In the men’s draw, Koen Hageraats came through a big battle against Joerg Kanonenberg in the semi-finals taking it +10 (21-10 14-21 21-8 5-12) before taking on the no 1 seed Sylvain Ternon in the final. Ternon won his semi-final against Léon Mamié +24 (21-23 21-4 21-12) and was hoping to win back-to-back titles.
Hageraats had a strong 4-0 head-to-head against Ternon going into the final, and proved to be too strong once again against the French player. The score was +16 (21-8 6-21 21-4 7-6). After the final Koen said ”I’m very happy with my win in Nussloch. After a lucky escape against Joerg, I won my final because of an advantagious profile against Sylvain.”
Joerg Kanonenberg managed to beat Léon Mamié by +4 (17-21 18-21 21-17 21-14) to finish third.
