This week’s IWT Polish Open, will see over 70 players return to the fantastic venue, Stefa Ruchu, just outside Warsaw. The venue has excellent facilities across all four sports, including multiple indoor tennis courts and a Sushi restaurant on site.
With the draws finalised, lets have a look at what is to come:
The Men’s A singles draw is extremely tough with all four seeds, in the 16-man strong draw, ranked within the top 10. The top four Jörg Kanonenberg (1), Nicolas Lenggenhager (2), Bastian Böhm (3), and Malte Thyregod (4) have many tough games ahead of them on their way to the semi-finals, especially with Lenggenhager facing Molnár Gergely, who recently reached the final of the SWT Austrian open, in the first round.
The Women’s A singles is a round-robin this year, between Stine Jacobsen, Lucie Hlavacova and Kirsten I. Kaptein. Jacobsen, as the defending champion, is the favourite for the title. However, Kaptein (world number 5) and Hlavacova (world number 16) will both be fighting to take the title away from her.
There is no Women’s A Doubles event this year, so Jacobsen is joining Thyregod in the Men’s A doubles to make up a 7 pair monrad, with the first seeds Böhm and Lenggenhager getting a buy through to the semi-finals. It will be fascinating to see how Jacobsen gets on against the men.
Similar to the Women’s A, the Mixed A draw only contains three pairs, with Jacobsen and Thyregod continuing their partnership in the mixed doubles. Kirsten I. Kaptein is playing with Gregory Lorkiewicz and Lucie Hlavacova partnering Matěj Volf. All three pairs will hope to secure the two wins needed to take the title.
We also look forward to seeing some close and exciting matches in the B and C categories, as well as the junior and senior events.
The players can look forward to the players’ dinner during the weekend and will hopefully get the chance to do some sight-seeing in Warsaw.
Good luck to all those competing.
