Hougaard & Thyregod win Gummiarm to progress to semis | World Doubles Championships – Day 1 Review

Myriam Enmer & Nathalie Vogel have knocked out top seeds, Kirsten I. Kaptein & Adeline Kilchenmann, to earn their place in the World Championships final. They will compete against second seeds, Anna-Klara Ahlmer & Stine Jacobsen, who have both won the title before, but never together.

But the biggest drama was right at the end of day 1 when Finnish duo Pekka Kainulainen & Henrik Mustonen came back from 20 points down after badminton to force a Gummiarm playoff (i.e. one extra point of tennis). Kresten Hougaard coolly played his return of serve down the sidelines for a winner, meaning he and Malte Thyregod will play in a semi final today.

Mixed Doubles

Marie Jaussein & Henrik Mustonen knocked out defending champion Anna-Klara Ahlmer & Christian Wiessner in round 1. But the French/Finnish pair couldn’t follow up in round 2, bowing out to top seeds Stine Jacobsen & Cornelius Radermacher.

Nathalie Vogel & Kresten Hougaard knocked out 3/4 seeds from Switzerland, Adeline Kilchenmann & Léon Mamié.

Amke Fischer & Leon Griffiths defeated Mollie Patterson & Nicolas Lenggenhager in their quarter final. Amke & Leon have both won Mixed World Doubles Championships before, but with different partners.

In the last quarter final, Myriam Enmer & Koen Hageraats ended Hong Kong’s hopes.  Joyce Chan played with Steven Cheng, who was a late replacement for Kevin Ng.

Semi finals update: Koen Hageraats has played an awesome squash set to keep the semi final alive. Amke & Leon need 12 points in tennis to win. Stine & Cornelius lead Nathalie & Kresten by 15 points before squash.

Men’s Doubles

Top seeds Leon Griffiths & Koen Hageraats were in ruthless form in their quarter final, defeating Hong Kong pair, Steven Cheng & Kevin Ng before tennis.

Nicolas Champod & Sylvain Ternon have upset 3/4 seeds Nicolas Lenggenhager & Leon Sam in the second quarter final.

German pair, Bastian Böhm & Cornelius Radermacher, came from behind to win against French pair, Julien Castel & Thomas Cavé. They’ll face the Danes who won their quarter final in a Gummiarm, as previously mentioned.

Women’s Doubles

Top seeds Kirsten I. Kaptein & Adeline Kilchenmann started the day strongly with a win before tennis against youngsters Alina Reissenauer & Clarissa Steiner. But they met their match in the semi final, coming up against two World Singles Champions, Myriam Enmer & Nathalie Vogel.

In the bottom half, Anna-Klara Ahlmer & Stine Jacobsen won their semi final against French combination, Flore Allègre & Marie Jaussein.

Satarra Thaker & Beth Pye caught up with Anna-Klara & Stine after their match.

When asked about the highlights of the day, Stine said, “It’s always fun to play TT against Marie… and Anna’s badminton.”
“Yeah, I managed to play good badminton. Even Stine was impressed!” joked Anna-Klara.

“It’s going to be really fun. It’s the first time we’ve played a final together in the World Champs.”
