Chan and Griffiths Take SWT Czech Open Titles

Joyce Chan has won the third and biggest of her career in Prague today as she defeated Virág Sákovics +23 (21-10 21-6 17-20) in the final with a dominant performance. With this performance Chan will solidify her position in the top 8 for the FIR Race this season as she now sits at no 7.

Kirsten Kaptein defeated Lucie Hlavacova +8 (21-2 9-21 21-14 8-14) in the bronze medal match. She will be almost certain of a spot in Switzerland, but will have to wait to see what happens in the remaining tournaments of the season.

Leon Griffiths has won his 3rd Czech Open title and 14th tour title today as he beat Koen Hageraats in the final. As expected they traded the first two sports, with Hageraats winning table-tennis 21-7 and Griffiths taking badminton 21-9. Griffiths was slightly stronger in squash, after some brutal rallies, taking the game 21-15, before taking the win in tennis with an 18-11 victory. The overall scorew as +11 (7-21 21-9 21-15 18-11).

Joerg Kanonenberg won an all German battle for bronze, beating Bastian Böhm +18 (21-12 21-18 21-15 4-4). He will overtake Nicolas Lenggenhager in the FIR Race, as the Swiss player did not play this tournament and their point difference was only four points! Hageraats and Böhm are also expected to rise up the FIR Race rankings with their good results this weekend.

Open Winners – Grafeneder, Barta-Boncz, Jirouch, Königsmarková/Port, Lätt/Edby

Jonas Grafeneder claimed the men’s B title in an all Austrian matchup against Johannes Sgiarovello. He took the match +21 (22-20 21-12 21-9 10-12). Bertrand Carlier finished third, beating David Dvorský +22 (21-7 19-21 21-11). Barta-Boncz won the women’s B defeating Czech player Tomková +22 (18-21 21-11 21-7 1-0) in the final. Annemarie Del Favero finished third as she beat Saga Frozkhan +26 (21-19 21-14 21-4).

The men’s C title went to Tomas Jirouch who beat Miroslav Ambrús +8 (21-14 14-21 21-8 9-14) in the final. Adam Borkowski beat Bartosz Panek +24 (21-9 21-13 21-17) for bronze. Czech duo Königsmarková/Port claimed a home victory as they won the Mixed B title, defeating Sákovics/Döbörhegyi +15 (11-21 21-2 21-12 4-7) in the final. Barta-Boncz/Prorok finished third.

Lätt/Edby won the men’s B doubles title as they beat Grafeneder/Steiner +15 (21-15 21-15 22-20 8-7) in the final. Dużyński/Panek finished third.

Junior titles for – Del Favero/Fojtík, Roman, Volf, Kotala and Reissenauer

It was great to see so many juniors participating in the Czech Open. Del Favero/Fojtík, claimed the U21 mixed doubles title together winning all their group matches. The U14 title went to top seed Damian Roman who was dominant in all his group matches. Vít Zobač finished second and Lucie Hanáčková finished third. Andreas Kotala added another title to his collection, claiming the U16 gold medal. Jendřejek finished second and Kniezek finished third.

Matěj Volf won the U21 title on home soil, having a tough battle against silver medalist Leonhard Prager which he took by +18 (21-23 21-12 15-21 21-4). David Dvorský finished third. Alina Reissenauer beat Clarissa Steiner to win the Girls U21 title. The score was +15 (13-21 21-18 21-6 12-7). Saga Frozkhan finished third, beating Annemarie Del Favero by just one point +1 (21-12 11-21 12-21 21-10).

Senior titles for – Port, Barta-Boncz, Hobzik/Pospisil

Jan Port claimed the +40 title on home soil defeating Bertrand Carlier +21 (9-21 21-7 21-10 9-1) in the final. Keith Lesser finished third. The women’s +45 title went to Barta-Boncz. Palotainé Pozsár finished second and Vancuríková finished third. Hobzik/Pospisil won the +45 doubles title beating Matecsa/Sákovics in the final. The score was +21 (14-21 21-6 21-8 1-1). Janzer/Sági finished third, beating Ostenfeld Larsen/Ostaszyk +7 (15-21 18-21 21-13 21-13). The +50 title went to Jirouch who beat Pospisil +31 (21-3 21-13 21-16).  Matecsa finished third.

Janzer won all his group matches claiming the +55 title. Edby finished second and Ostenfeld Larsen finished third. Sákovics won the +65 title beating Ray Ryan in the final. Phil Pinto finished third.
