Bettina Bugl and Michi Dickert were crowned the Austrian National Racketlon Champions last week as the tournament was held in the lead-up to the World Championships in August.
The 2nd Sport Austria Finals took place from June 16 to 19. Over 6,000 athletes from 27 national sports federations took part across 22 venues around Austria.
Racketsport Center Graz – the venue for the FIR Racketlon World Championships 2022 – Elite & Amateur – hosted the 20th Austrian National Racketlon Championships.
Bugl, Dickert & Sportunion Rackathletes Win at Austrian National Championships
On the final Sunday, Bettina Bugl finally won her first national singles title with a final victory over Irina Olsacher.
In an epic men’s final, Michi Dickert beat Marcel Weigl on a dramatic gummiarm point. This came after the Racketlon Federation Austria President missed three match points on the tennis court. It eventually finished 18-21, 21-14, 15-21 and 25-22, with Dickert claiming the title once again.
“It was the match of my life without a happy ending. Congratulations to Michi to turn a match he had in fact almost lost”, said Weigl afterwards.
That was Dickert’s 11th national title in men’s singles. In a post-match interview, he also declared his interest in a potential elite wild card to compete in the FIR Racketlon World Championships 2022.
Weigl was able to celebrate elsewhere across the weekend. He took home the Bundesliga title with his team Sportunion Rackathletes Austria. The rest of the winning team were Bettina Bugl, Florian Harca, Stefan Urban, Hans Sherpa and Lukas Windischberger.
