Top 7 seeds + Ratzer reach quarter finals | World Championships Singles

There were few upsets on Day 1 in Rotterdam, with 7 out of the top 8 seeds winning through to the quarter finals. The only unseeded player left, is 6 time World Champion, Jesper Ratzer.

Jesper Hedlund from Sweden played some great table tennis and squash to defeat number 8 seed Mandrin Mouchet in round 1. He continued his table tennis form into round 2 defeating Jesper Ratzer 21-5, before Ratzer took control of the match to win by 20 points. Ratzer plays defending champion Luke Griffiths in the quarter final.

Luke Griffiths appeared relaxed on day 1 as he defeated wildcard Josselin Gadé then Thorsten Lentfer.

Local hero Koen Hageraats was clinical in his first two matches, defeating Keith Lesser and Leon Sam by 45 and 39 points respectively. The World Number 4 will need to continue this focus into the quarter finals, as his opponent has been similarly ruthless. Sylvain Ternon received a walkover in round 1 before defeating Leonhard Prager by 28 points.

Koen Hageraats is the sole Dutch player in the Men’s elite singles.

World Number 3 Joerg Kanonenberg was pushed in his opening match against Jonathan Ritter, when the Brit won badminton and squash. However, Joerg was able to take control of the match in tennis, as he does so frequently. The man from Cologne then defeated Thomas Cavé before tennis.

Joerg will face Dane Kresten Hougaard in the quarter finals. Kresten survived a first round scare against Damien Andre. The World Number 6 then defeated countryman Malte Thyregod by 9 points.

Kresten Hougaard may have lost the tennis set 13-19, but that was enough for a 3-point victory against Frenchman Damien Andre.

The last quarter final will be between Nicolas Lenggenhager from Switzerland and Leon Griffiths from Great Britain. Nico is yet to need his tennis racquet, defeating Michal Horácek by 27 and Julien Castel by 26 points. Leon has only played against other Brits so far, defeating Anant Gupta by 26 and Matthew Davidson by 17.

The Men’s quarter finals kick off from 12:40 PM, but before that we have more elite action! Round 1 of the Women’s Singles starts at 11:20 AM.
