World Doubles – a quick overview by Holly Ranson

Switzerland is a country famed for the iconic Swiss Alps, luxury watch brands, its world-class chocolate and cheese and this year Switzerland is hosting the Racketlon World Doubles Championships. With the tournament being held in such an alluring country, there is no doubt that it will not only be a great
venue for a tournament but also offer up a lot of sight-seeing opportunities for players to partake in during their time in the country. With highlights including the Lindt Chocolate Factory and the stunning Lake Zurich there are plenty of attractions to see, whilst playing in the tournament.

Last year the world doubles were held in Denmark and saw some fierce competition between many tough pairs, with the elite titles going to Leon Griffith and Luke Griffith in the Mens’ Doubles, Luke Griffith and Anna-Klara Ahlmer in the Mixed Doubles, and Anna-Klara Ahlmer and Amke Fischer in the Womens’ Doubles. However, the elite titles were not the only titles to be ferociously fought over with many close matches occurring in the junior and senior categories, especially in the mixed doubles over forties category which was decided by just two points in the final as Fabienne Donny and Mohammed Tarik
came away with the title.

As we look forwards to this year’s World Doubles Championships, there is once again an extremely competitive field of over 160 players entered across all categories and with all the world titles once again up for grabs, who will end the year as World Champions? As none of last year’s elite winners have entered with the same partner as last year, those hoping to defend their title will have to do so with a different partner at their side.

The most important person is not one of the players, but Esther Dübendorfer, the tournament organiser, who has the tough job of keeping such a large tournament on track! We all greatly appreciate her efforts
and hopefully there will be many others to support her.

See you all in Zurich!!
