Tournament Director Krenn with triple-victory

The 2nd Vienna Classics (10-12.2) ended with a triple victory of World number one, Christoph Krenn. With victories in the Men Elite Singles and Doubles with Michi Dickert plus the mixed title with Zuzana Kubanova the tournament director used his home court advantage for a triple victory. The Czech girl also won the women elite draw. The best seniors of the weekend were Peter Sakovics (+45) from Hungary and Zdenek Devaty (+60) from the Czech Republic, while Lukas Windischberger (AUT) was on top of the u21-podium. With 120 players from 15 countries the kick-off of the World Tour 2012 was a great success and shall be held again 2013. All results and end positions are now online on www.resultreporter.com

Wildcard Makovec reaches semis

The first surprise of the tournament in the elite draws was Janez Makovec. The Slovenian wildcard player eliminated both seeded players Marcel Weigl and Jermaine Manners in two close matches and ended up fourth after being defeated by Krenn in the semis. On the lower half of the draw Joey Schubert hat little trouble to reach the final. Neither the two Poles Samonek or Stolicki put him in danger nor did bronze medal winner German Thorsten Deck in the semifinals. The final between the two Austrians Krenn and Schubert was very close and decided in the middle of the Squash set. Going in to Squash even, Schubert had a 16:3 lead, but then gave Krenn 11 points. This was too much for the Tennisplayer, who played one of his best Racketlon Tennissets ever and crashed Schubert with 21:2 to take a save victory in his home club Tennispoint Vienna in the end.

16-year-old Seehofer reaches final

The second surprise of the tournament in the elite draws was Christine Seehofer from Austria. The only 16-year-old is the youngest player on the FIR World Tour ever to reach a final and the way she did was impressing. Five points behind against world number two Nathalie Zeoli going into Tennis, she saved five match points against the presumably better Tennisplayer to win the gummiarm point. The semi agains Eva Hrabina was then even over before the Tennis and in the final she at least won Tabletennis against the reigning world champion Zuzana Kubanova. The Czech girl on her side had no problems for victory only even went to Tennis in her first round against Simone Seitz.

Nathalie Zeoli with two double titles

Men doubles was ruled by Krenn/Dickert as usual, but had quite a challenge in the final with Weigl/Manners who were able to win both the Badminton and the Squash set. A surprising strong performance was delivered by alternate pair Austaller/Larsen (AUT/DEN) who made it to the semis and ended up fourth after losing to Czingraber/Nandori. The two Hungarians beat topseeded Köpf/Schubert in the quarters in the gummiarm point with a beautiful halfvolley lob. Mixed doubles was an easy victory for first times Kubanova/Krenn, beating the Zeolis in the final with Nathalie Zeoli taking her second title in women doubles with Nicole Eisler.

Austrians dominate most other draws

The Austrian u21 qualifying tournament for the team world champs was won by Lukas Windischberger with a final victory over his friend Lukas Trojan. In Seniors (45+) world number one Peter Sakovics was once again not to beat, by fellow Volker Sach in the final. The two paired together to take the Seniors doubles title too. Czech Zdenek Devaty took the (60+) gold medal and Balasz Francia was the winner in the Men B draw, while all other draws were dominated by Austrians with Bettina Bugl winning Women B, Martin Kova taking Men C and Christoph Preissl on top of the Men D podium.

A World Tour event takes 3 days

A big help goes to all the sponsors and helpers of the 2nd Vienna Classics, without them such an event would not be possible. Our ladies at the tournament desk ask us to remind all players that an international World Tour event takes 3 days and thus it is very tiring and often due to court restrictions not possible to fulfil all wishes to play more and more matches on Saturday night. Otherwise many of the players expressed their gratitude for the perfect restaurant conditions and the World Tour t-shirts as tournament presents and asked Tournament Director Christoph Krenn to organise the 3rd Vienna Classics in 2013 again. “We are very happy and thankful and will consider”, says Krenn reminding the Austria only jumped in for cancelled Swedish Open in Malmö.
