SWEDES HIT BACK ON HOME GROUND
Stefan Adamsson is the winner of Comparative Swedish Open 2010 after beating Christoph Krenn in the final. With Christian Wall taking bronze Sweden takes revenge for the big defeat at the World Champs. Kerstin Peckl (credit: RFA) saves Austrias honour though and takes her first title on the FIR World Tour. Men Doubles went to the surprise newcomers from Germany: Othmar Neidhart and Thorsten Deck. In Mixed Doubles new pair Anneli Andersson and Alexander Köpf took gold and in Seniors +45 it was Peter Sakovics on top of the podium once again. 420 matches with over 200 players from 20 countries. Adamsson takes revenge
The Men Elite draw was an exciting tournament with quite a few not expected results, like the victory of Ismö Rönkkö over Joey Schubert in the first round. Others missed their chances like Henrik Hakansson who let Jermaine Manners take the 17 points he needed to win in Tennis. In the end it was the dream final between number one and two of the world and a close victory of Stefan Adamsson over Christoph Krenn. Both Tabletennis and Badminton could have gone either way, but the Swede took two 21:18 victories. After a superb Squash victory with 21:10, Adamsson only needed 5 points to win and the title was his at 5:11. In the match for third place Christian Wall defeated Thorsten Deck and proved that the Swedes are back after their heavy defeat at the World Championships 2009.
Kerstin Peckl with 1st title
With Krenn losing the final, national number one Kerstin Peckl held up the Austrian flag to win her first Women Elite title on the World Tour. Unseeded Peckl beat Lieselot de Bleeckere and topseeded Inge van den Herrewegen to meet Karin Geertsma in the final. After a perfect 21:3 start against the Dutch national team player Peckl played home the match in Tennis with 21:6 after losing both Badminton and Squash. Bronze went to Inge van den Herrewegen. In Women Doubles the title went to Anneli Andersson as did in Mixed Doubles. The Swedish national team player made a good choice in her parterners with Alexander Köpf and wildcard player Liza Wulffeld.
Deck player of the tournament
Thorsten Deck was definitely the player of the tournament after only getting a place in the Men Elite draw as an Alternate player after John O`Donnell cancelled. The German then eliminated two seeded players Marcel Weigl (7) and Alexander Köpf (4) by a couple of points and was only stopped in the semifinals by later winner Stefan Adamsson. In Men Elite Doubles Deck even lead Ottmar Neidhardt to their first ever with two prestigious victories over Rönkkö/Tyyskä in the final and Krenn/Schubert in the semis. Topseeded Köpf/Weigl did not start, due to the presidents misbooking of his flights which ended up in a weekend of disaster with Weigl not arriving home in Vienna until Monday after lunch due to weather conditions in Frankfurt with a number of cancelled connection flights on Sunday.
Swedes dominate, Sakovics wins twice
In all other amateur classes Swedes dominated as well. Johan Nordstrand (Men B), Oscar Simonsson (Men C) and Soren Skak Jensen (Men D), Ole Beneus (Seniors 55+) can call themselves Swedish Open winners. Peter Sakovis proves he is still young and wins the first ever 50+ Seniors as well as the 45+ competition. In the oldest age class 60+, Sten Lindström wrote Racketlon history with a Finnish victory. Another prestigious title went to Ken-Kristjan Toomjoe from Estonia who won the u21 final against Antti Tyyskä the second time in a row after the World Champs.
Players scan results
Except for some problems with the time schedule which was not out until the very last second, Swedish Open in Malmö was a great success once again. With new mobile Badminton courts it was now possible to play Badminton and Tabletennis on centre courts and the screens for live matches of resultreporter were huge. One innovation and idea for other tournaments is the so called tournament package which included two nights in IBIS hotel with breakfast, 5 meals at the sportscentre and the entry fee for only 170€. “Magnificent, I hope this is copied by other tournament organisers”, says FIR-President Marcel Weigl who thanked Thomas Troedsson and his team for the great effort. The other new innovation came from Resultreporter inventor Rickard Tauson and makes work for organisers simpler. The winner of each match takes his scorecard to the registration desk and scans it with a handscanner, then he can enter his own result in seconds and confirms. “This has another positive effect too, the probability that the result is entered correctly is increased to 99,9%”, is Weigl pleased.
